Castles, Castles, and More Castles III: Edinburgh Castle and The Scottish Regalia

A rare sunny day in Edinburgh

Sitting atop a tall rocky hill the castle Edinburgh Castle dominates the skyline of the capital of Scotland. From the train station we could see the it sitting upon castle rock, looking down on us as peasants with all its grandeur. We had to walk a bit to get up to the castle but as most things in life, it was well worth the journey.

The Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle
The esplanade which guides visitors into the castle is quite intimidating with the expanse of the medieval buildings behind it. Several witches were burnt at the stake on the esplanade including one woman who was accused of attempting to assassinate King James V in 1536. The path narrows off near the entrance only allows a row of five people to pas through at a time. Being built on an incline and in the middle of a nonstop drizzle, it was very slippery as we hastily made our way up the steep paths in the castle. The castle itself is sort of the Scotland's equivalent to The Tower of London in England.

Summer Heat at UT Tyler

Summer days are here again as the heat rises and the stress filled sweat of the past semester begins to fall. We skip and dance about in the summer sun, taking in its rays with each passing second. Yet, these summer rays are deceitful and full of lies and hate..... especially when it comes to your skin. Before leaving your apartment / house / condo / penthouse / underpass / cave, you should take the time to prepare for the intense heat the East Texas summer tends to bring. Last summer I wrote a blog on keeping cool in the summer inside your place of residence and now it's time I take a different approach to the summer.

According to statistics (these you can believe) between 1979 and 2003 there were about 8,000 heat related deaths in the United States. The heat in Texas is especially dangerous as the local weather's personality is wishy-washy to say the least. this is even true during the summer months as the weather can go from a comfortable 76 degrees (This is America so I'll use Fahrenheit) to a sweltering triple digit afternoon with high humidity and not a cloud in the sky. So I though I would put together a short but useful tip guide on how to prepare for the summer in Tyler, Texas.

Before even thinking about stepping foot outside there are a few things you must do first.

1) Check The Weather
Look up what the weather will be like for the day and separate the forecast by morning, afternoon, and
evening. the weather. this will allow you to see what the day has in store so you can plan your day accordingly. For Example: If it's supposed to be warm and sunny early in the day and rainy and muggy in the afternoon head out to the lake or swim in the pool earlier in the day. If the weather disrupts all outdoor activity you can always travel to the local movie theater and check out one of the summer blockbusters in air conditioning. Also, be aware of severe weather that the early summer can bring through the region such as lightening, thunderstorms, hail, and tornadoes. It is always best to stay inside and pay attention to your local news stations in the event of severe weather.

2) Dress Accordingly
Whether you are planning on staying in all day or planning an all day hike you always need to plan your attire. Cotton is always your friend in the summer months. It's a breathable fabric that is easy to wash and care for. As most of you may know you should avoid most synthetic fibers as they are usually rough, hot, and generally uncomfortable to wear. Wear loose-fitting, lightweight clothing and a wide-brimmed hat to keep you cool. That being said you should always think about tip #1 when dressing for a summer day in Texas. For example: if you get caught out in a summer rainstorm you want to have more than your toms and a Wal-Mart sack. Try keeping an umbrella in your car at all times just in case. Plus you can open up the umbrella even when its sunny to make some quick shade for yourself. You may think you look silly but all those onlookers won't be laughing when their skin turns red and starts to peel (too much?)

3) Mind The Sun
According to the CDC only about 58% of adults properly protect themselves against the sun through things such as applying sunscreen or simply seeking shade. Only 32% reported to using sunscreen at all. Sunscreen is one of the most important tools you can use when protecting yourself against the sun. You should apply a generous amount to any part of your body that is not covered by clothing including you nose, cheeks, and forehead. I recently made the mistake of not applying sunscreen when I was outside recently and paid for it with a nasty sunburn on my forehead. In accordance to tip #2 you should also take advantage of the many stylish wide-brimmed hats that are available at your local clothing retailer. Seriously... PROTECT YOURSELF!

4) Water Is Your Best Friend
The CDC recommends that you drink about 2 full glasses of water each hour to stay hydrated in summer conditions. Really cold ice water is not recommended after being exposed to high temperatures for an extended period of time as it can lead to bad stomach cramps. You should also avoid alcoholic beverages or those high in sugar as they will both further dehydrate you. Sports drinks are fine if you sweat a lot but not as a substitute for water. As you sweat you also lose important minerals such as salt which a sports drink will help to replenish. However, you should be wary of how much you drink and remember how much better water is for your overall health.

Be sure to visit the CDC's webpage on extreme heat for further information on how to stay cool and safe this summer.

College Bride!

For past couple of months, it has been a very stressful year for me. On top of school and everything, I have to plan my wedding for the summer. Yes! I am a "summer college bride". As exciting as this sounds, it’s been getting very hectic for me to plan a wedding while being a full time student. Especially since this is my last year, I have to make sure everything goes smoothly for me to graduate in fall next semester.
I have been living a very busy life. And just when I thought that I will eventually get a break after my wedding, I will be taking summer II classes! I guess I am just so used to being busy I couldn’t resist taking those classes. But it will all be worth it at the end when I graduate from UT Tyler with my Health Studies degree.
A little bit about what I will be doing after finals… Well, my plans are to get everything settled for my wedding within that month that I will get without school. And I am hoping that I will accomplish that within that time period.  And since I have a huge family, I will be having a grand time in June! Probably the only thing I am looking forward to since its getting so stressful for me.
So right now all I am anxiously waiting for is to semester to end so I can get excited for this big day in June.
Here is a little tip for everyone: If you are planning a wedding and going to school at the same time, plan everything ahead or it will get very stressful! Wish me Luck J

Summer Days Are Here Again!

‘Tis that time again where students finish up their final exams and give shouts of glee, or try to forget about how much of a slaughter this round was. Everyone is tired and ready to walk the stage or take a break for summer.

Or maybe you’re one of the souls who has chosen to continue the work this summer with The University of Texas at Tyler or your local community college. That’s cool too, and I wish you all the best. I was supposed to visit Japan this summer with GATE here at UT Tyler, but my plans fell through. It was sad, but I’m okay with it.

I’m on the precipice of a summer full of new things and I can’t express how excited I am to have a break from academia for a little bit and focus on work and leisure for just a little while during the time I attempt to work out the kinks in my career path that showed up this year (see this blog for the previous episode in that saga). I’m so ready for a moment to breathe, and I know all of you are, too!

Here’s a list of things I’ll be up to this summer:

  • ! Working here and blogging with you all!
  • ! Earning some monies to do other fun things (or pay for college next semester, that’s good too)
  • ! Paying some much needed attention to my poor neglected Book Blog
  • ! Read more amazing books!
  • ! Go to schliterbahn. I have to. HAVE TO.
  • ! Visit friends and family around Texas
  • ! Go to California for a weekend in August
  • ! Plan a vacation to Portland with two of my best friends
  • ! Spend time with said best friends and other ones too, new and old.
  • ! Play me some video games!
  • ! Get to all the other neglected things that need my attention this summer.

Yup, that’s a really long list. What about you guys?!?! Ready for the long summer days and time for leisure?

First Time Out of the Country

One week from today I will be embarking on a trip to England with my parents and one of my brothers (I have 3). I have been out of the country so this trip kind of scares me. It’s not the travelling in a metal tube for 9 hour propelled by highly explosive fuel that bothers me. It’s the whole “I’ve never done this before” that gets me. I've traveled through most of the Midwest before but leaving the country is something completely new and foreign to me. But I guess there’s a first time for everything.

I always like to try new things and generally explore, but I have never done so in this way. I look forward to visiting “where the history comes from” yet I’m being unusually cautious. Why am I feeling this why? What should I do? Why do you care? Why am I talking to myself?

Being scared about something new is an entirely natural thing. How you react to this new thing is what matters. So, I plan on reacting by recording my travels and keep up to date logs so I may present you all with a series of blogs on my travels. Stay tuned!

5 more weeks at UT Tyler!!

As I was registering for classes for fall semester, I came to realize that we only have 5 more weeks left till summer. This is kind of scary because that means only 4 more weeks till finals

That just absolutely scares me because I am a #1 procrastinator. This semester has been really long for me and just can’t wait till it’s over in May. Even though I won’t be able to get a long summer vacation because I’m registered for summer 2 classes, I am still looking forward to ending this semester smoothly.
I think this is the time when everyone should be sorting out their last minute assignments and getting ahead of their agenda. I am trying to study for my finals to avoid last minute pressure. And I think everyone should start doing that as well. Especailly for all the procrastinators out there. It will all be worth it at the end.
Remember guys, the finals seems far but it’s not!
Let’s finish this semester and start planning out our summer 2013!

Back to Reality (UT Tyler)!!

So now that the spring break is over, it's hard to get back on track with the classes at UT Tyler. But as a student we have to keep in mind that finals are just few weeks away, and as for me, all of my major projects, assignments, and exams are coming up next week.

My spring break went by extremely fast, so its getting hard for me to get back with my classes. But on the positive side, we have less than 2 months till the summer and I am looking forward to that because fall 2013 will be my last semester here at UT Tyler.

Here are some things you can do to keep you on track to end this semester smoothly:
- create an agenda for yourself for upcoming due dates.
- keep in touch with your professors to make sure you are on track before the finals week.
- DO NOT wait till last minute to complete a major project or an assignment.
- And always make sure to have fun and make this semester a good experience for you.

Make sure to leave a comment and let us know about your spring break experience! Let's make this a great semester and get ready for summer 2013!!
