Registration for classes for next semester began on November 1st. Registration is open to everyone and if you haven't already made your schedule, please do!

 If you need help navigating myUTTyler, Emmy made a blog post about it to guide you. If you haven't spoken to your advisor about your schedule and your degree plan, make an appointment.

Some students self-advise after their freshman year when they're required to go to a freshman advisor, but it's in your best interest to go see your advisor to make sure that you're on track. Your advisor can also give you the schedule of classes that your department is going to be teaching the following semester.

For our students that have applied for next spring, get an appointment with an advisor as soon as possible. The quicker you can get registered, the better chance you have at getting a schedule with the times you want and having to change your schedule around because some classes are closed.

The less classes you have left to finish your degree plan, the more registering is like The Hunger Games.

REGISTER FOR YOUR  SENIOR REQUIREMENTS

I had to take a research methods class last year as a senior requirement and as soon as I was able to register, I enrolled into it. Those are the kinds of classes that fill up quickly; I asked a classmate that was a year below me and he couldn't register the day after because the class was already closed. 

Get the hang of enrolling in classes and learn how to navigate myUTTyler like the back of your hand. You are going to need that skill when you're almost done with your undergrad career.

Crisis Averted

This pass Tuesday while in the business building I was taken aside by my adviser and told there was something important she needed to talk with me about. About two months ago I submitted my application for graduation and had been eagerly awaiting word from my department since. However, she had some bad news. She said I was 2 hours short of graduating this December.

My first reaction was to flip over all the tables in site whilst screaming at the top of my lungs, "POR QUE!!!!!!!!!!!!" I instead decided to go with my second reaction and asked if there is anything that could be done. She said she had already begun to set up an independent study course with her that would make up those hours. In less than 10 minutes one of the biggest crises of my college career had been brought to my attention and then averted. I went and filled out the proper paperwork and am now registered for an independent study of 19^th century presidents.

I couldn’t imagine another University where this could have occurred. At any larger school I would have been treated like another number and simply pushed to the side. At The University of Texas at Tyler you are treated like a person with the respect and dignity you deserve and the professors here truly want you to succeed as a student. It’s times like these I’m glad I chose a school like UT Tyler.

Summer Classes

          My creative writing class starts on the 9th (Summer II), and I should really start concerning myself with writing some fiction. This is my first online class, so I'm getting nervous. :/ So, in order to quell my nerves in that special, obsessive way, I give you a list!

• Am I registered for it? Yes, for sure, and the time hasn't moved. 
• Have I paid for it? Sure thing, I paid for that class, because my account shows that I did with no remaining balance.
• Do I even know where it is? I mean, it's online. That's easy. 

Okay, okay. Since I am a senior, I basically have those types of things figured out, and I know the answers to these tough questions, but do you? 

The deadline to pay is July 6th, at 5pm! Don't let the 4th of July distract you, or you'll get dropped! I linked above to most of the places you'd need to visit to get your classes in line for Summer II.

I'm ready to get back to work. That brain break was nice, but I'm ready.

UT Tyler Summer Checklist

Now that the stress of finals is over and summer is here it’s all too easy to sit back and enjoy the break and forget to prepare for the fall semester. So here’s a quick checklist of things you might want to do before the fall semester starts up.

• Register for classes here. This one seems a little obvious, but there’s always a massively long line in front of the registrar’s office the first week of classes.
• Look up what books you’re going to need and see where you can buy them. The bookstore on campus is always a good place to go, or if you would rather buy them online then Amazon and Chegg are both a good place to look. 
•       Fill out your FAFSA. Remember, you have to fill a new FAFSA every school year.
    ·     Renew your school parking permit. With the school restriping the parking lots on campus, parking will be easier than ever.
     ·   Go ahead and skim through your text books for next semester. Don’t try and understand the material. Just try and get a basic understanding of what concepts the class will be covering. I find this to be very helpful when I’m taking classes that I have no previous background in, like Engineering Fundamentals of Thermodynamics.         

The Quest for the "Perfect Schedule"

Don't run from your fall schedule... REGISTER NOW!

      It is again that time of year where I am finally trying to figure out the ‘perfect schedule’ for the Fall semester registration. Because I don’t have very many hours left to take, my next two semesters of my undergraduate career will be a seemingly lighter load. The desire to accomplish the elusive ‘perfect schedule’ is still very much present. Only Tuesday/Thursday classes or only Monday/Wednesday/Friday classes? Early morning and get it over or later classes and sleep in? So many questions in the quest for MY perfect schedule.

         In my experience there is a few things which will help you in your future scheduling conflicts you will encounter.

11.       Register EARLY. If you are in a bigger department, all of the ‘good’ classes (or the classes everyone HAS to take) will be full if you do not get there in time.

Don't wait until the last minute

            Hey gang, registration is upon us and I cannot stress it enough, do NOT wait until the last minute to register.... pleeaaaaaseeeeee. You have no idea how much it can throw off all of your plans when you're too slow on the draw. You could end up with either a lot of morning classes, evening classes, or worst yet...
no classes at all.
           At this stage in the game, I have a very shallow pool of classes to take so if I'm not quick on the draw I could be in a very tough spot. I could lose an entire semester or be forced to make it up in the summer. I have been lucky so far as I haven't had a class close on me, but I do know the pains of trying to get into a closed class.
