Be Part of Research at UT Tyler You Say? Psychological Research!
Yes indeed students of The University of Texas at Tyler, if you ever wanted to be one of those cool test subjects you hear about in psychological studies, you can make it a reality here on campus! Our Psychology Department is a fantastic segment of campus that offers classes from Undergraduate all the way to Doctorates and minors in between!
I happen to be minoring in it myself. However, you don't have to be involved in the classroom in the Psychology department to participate in psychological surveys and occasionally even studies. When I was a Freshman, we had some basic classes where members from the school of psychology would pass out surveys and ask the class to fill them out. They aren't ever mandatory, so if brain studies and personal questions freak you out, no worries.
I chose to participate last year voluntarily in one of those surveys before I'd chosen to minor in the field, and based on my responses, I made a good candidate for a second level of testing that takes place in a lab here on campus. It's incredibly interesting, fun, and they will pay you for your time. (Quite well, I might add).
This semester I took my first Psychology class and I was required to participate in research for class credits as part of a grade (the alternative was a research essay). I did another survey for credit, and this time the Sass CPR Lab wanted me again for a different study and they wanted to study my brainwaves!! How cool is that?! So of course I agreed to participate. It was definitely something I felt was a once in a lifetime experience and I felt like I was helping groundbreaking research be done.
Here's a picture of me getting set up to do the study!
Another thing you can participate in, if you're interested in free counseling, is allowing psychology students practice their counseling skills on you. If you need serious help though, do consider visiting the Student Counseling Center, which is also free.

Quizzes are coming...
It's reached that time in the semester that quizzes and tests have started rolling like a menacing fog at twilight.
So everybody has put on their "study hats" and buckled down.
I, myself, have only a quiz and test next Tuesday. That is all. I believe that is likely minuscule compared to other's course loads.
---if you're a reader, still reading this post, and you are attending UT Tyler, how many tests and or quizzes do YOU have next week?
The hammer of stress may have finally hit the ground for some students.
Worry not my minions. Just remember three things:
- Study the material when you can. Don't study if you are not going to be able to actually comprehend the material.
- Take breaks. Don't overload yourself with the information. This should NOT lead to procrastination. If it does, rethink your study plan.
- Use mnemonic devices as a last resort when memorizing terms.
That is all for today. Now I must retreat into my study cave and memorize psychology terms til I dream about them.

Midterms.
Today I had a test in my Developmental Psychology class, which wouldn't have been so bad, except it was over 11 chapters. It's hard to keep up with a class knowing that you don't have your first test until the middle of the semester, especially when you have 4 other classes to worry about.
Overall I think I did pretty well on it, but I just don't think midterms are a very good idea for many reasons. The test is over 11 chapters but there were only 75 questions so the professor really isn't going to be able to see if we actually learned the material or not because that's not many questions for the amount of information we covered. I'm definitely not looking forward to the final, because it's over 15 chapters, but I'm going to try and keep up and read the chapters we cover each week.

Studying.
These are the note cards I made for my Physiology of Psychology class. I'm not looking forward to memorizing all of these but that's why I have broken them up into groups of 20 so the task is not as daunting. My goal is to make all A's again this semester so I have already started making study guides for all my tests and reading all the chapters.
So far I think Physiology of Psychology is going to be my hardest class just because there is so much information. My Sense and Perception class could be hard as well though because the professor that is teaching that also taught the Psychopharmacology class that I took which was extremely hard. I'm also taking an online class which I don't think I will have to study much for, just read and and making sure I stay on schedule with everything.
I hope everyones semester has started off good!

And the studying begins..
Started classes today, which I wasn't too excited about but in the end it ended up being a good day! I had Intro to Clinical and Counseling Psychology at 9:30 which I think will end up being my favorite class because counseling is what I want to do. At 2:00 I had Physiological Psychology which is probably going to be my hardest class, but really interesting at the same time.
On Monday,Wednesdays and Fridays I have Developmental Psychology which I think will be my least favorite class because I have heard some pretty bad things about this class. I don't have a choice though because this class is required and there is only one professor that teaches it. I also have two online classes, Multi-Cultural Studies and Sex Roles and the Life Cycle which I'm a little nervous about because I'm hoping I don't end up forgetting about them, they're are really interesting though so I don't think I will.
Also I'm a little nervous because I have taken online classes in the past and they have been really easy but I've heard here at UT Tyler they're a lot harder. Hope everyone else has had a good first day back!
