Finding your Groove/Major!

The decision has been made as I find myself in my final major of choice. The major being Computer Information System.Only thing left to follow my heart and mind, will be filling out the papers! This decision became final as I completed both sections of programming fundamentals this fall! Woo-hoo!

I went through a laundry list of majors but only changed my major officially 2 times. The transition  truly just being from Business(Accounting) to Computer Information System. I was lucky enough to not LOSE ANY CREDITS! or take many(only one) extra course not needed to complete my degree. I will only be semester behind(if I don't take summer classes).

Changing my major didn't allow to escape from  business classes. I still have to take a few of them for my minor(minor I choose because it was easy and I had more than half the credits needed). This spring, I will be taking two management classes! which i'm only partially excited because one of them is online and that just sounds awesome at this point.

It has taking me a bit to get where I am. I wouldn't change the experiences and friends I made while in business. I made an easy transition from high school and college, because I was apart of the Student Learning Community. I did decently in my business classes and was challenged only in accounting. Right now, everything is a challenging, learning new languages and the proper ways to think. What the fun in doing something that your good at if it isn't difficult?

Alas, the semester is at it's demise, I seem to be passing all my classes and procrastination is just nipping at my heels. Overall, this is first semester I feel content with my major and ready to continue on!

Looking for a job or internship?

Jobs and internships can be hard to come by. In college, there are times that it is difficult to balance work, school, getting involved on campus and having fun. We all need money, so sacrificing some things are necessary. Whether it is sacrificing time with friends or working less hours, it is all up to the individual’s discretion. Nevertheless, finding a job or internship related to your major is absolutely essential in honing your skills in your field of study.

There is a relatively new resource offered for students who need to find a job or internship. It is called MyEdu.

Choosing a Major at UT Tyler: EEEK!!!

So maybe you’re a freshman, just out of high school and you aren’t sure what direction you want to go with your college career. Or, maybe you’re an upperclassman who has discovered your dream to be a physics expert just isn’t working out. Whatever the case may be, whenever you find yourself floundering for a college major, it can be really scary.

To be honest with you guys, I came with a major in mind and scrapped it almost immediately, and remained undecided until last semester. Finally, I decided to major in Political Science here at The University of Texas at Tyler, only to hit another wall, and I’m considering changing my major again. I can tell you, finding your niche is not easy!

Luckily, I learned about this neat service our campus provides. If you’ve never seen it, we have a Student Counseling Center (Check out Michael's blog on getting support you need, here) up on the third floor of the University Center, and they offer a service called CareerCounseling, where you can walk in, make an appointment, and have several sessions in which you speak to a counselor and take a couple of assessments to determine some of your interests and personal strengths.

The assessments I took were the STRONG interest inventory, and the Meyers-Brigg personality test.

Once you take the tests, you can discuss your results and bounce some ideas with your counselor, and by the end, I know I felt like I was one step closer to finding my ideal career. The best part is, the service is completely free to students.

The Headaches are Common

I’m still having a large amount to reconsider, though. I guess what you need to know is that it’s not terribly important to have a major especially for your first years. Taking your basic classes will be more than enough to keep most students busy!

So, moral of the story, don’t freak out if you don’t know what to do with yourself. You’ll figure it out, and there are so many people in your boat, and many more who want to help. Don’t give up, and look at coming to college as an adventure!

Final Semester CHAOS

So this is not my normal kind of post, but this semester has been extremely insane. I've dealt with the turbulence of Biology classes ( three at once! ), taking my final level of Japanese, and then also doing online-classes to boot!

Psychmarkcrimaccountturejustice is my major

Courtney Sheets and Megan Allen already talked about choosing and deciding their major. Now it's my time to shine!

I've been told by many many people that changing your major is okay. Everybody does it and it's good to change because you learn what works best for you.
I believe this but this does not calm down my mind as I calculate the income of my future job by my major and my future happiness in this job and field.
This past semester alone, I have bounced around changing my major over FIVE times (Criminal Justice, Marketing, Psychology, Accounting, Architecture). But i'm still a Marketing major.
(Eli thinks this means i'm trying to be Batman with indecisiveness with my majors)

Through my accounting class, I've learned I shall never be an accountant because basically my head explodes in that class when we go over something new.
Currently i'm on a kick to become an Architect. I've done tons of research about it but I have NO idea whether I can get into a program and all that jazz.
So I keep telling myself "One step at a time, Obi-Wan". So first step! sign up for Physics 1301 next fall and beast mode or fail the class to decide if I want to still be an architect. For now i'm drawing buildings in a moleskin while going through life.

Starving Artist? Try Starving Writer.

After deciding to attend college, I already knew what I didn't want to do. Picking a major is, undoubtedly, a major decision. You will never find me happily sitting in a math or science class. My preference is not based upon not recognizing the importance of those fields; I do. However, I have always been more moved by issues in communication and language. Without proper skills in reading and writing, a person has no hope to retain lessons from the past or communicate effectively their preferences for the future.

When I came out to my family as an English Major, they were pleased, assuming that I would be a teacher or professor. After I cleared up that I had no interest in teaching, they were concerned. "But isn't that the only thing you can do with a degree in English?" "How will you support yourself?" "Oh, you'll be broke your whole life."

Of course, I started to worry. How would I support myself? If everyone expects me to teach, maybe that is all I would be capable of? I started considering possibly changing my major back to business. That idea was far more well received, and seemed practical.

Then, I read the description on UT Tyler's website, and the information they shared eased my mind. Without understanding the past and the people that inhabited it, we have no hope to better ourselves in the future. Plenty of fields are looking for individuals that have a command of language. My department graduates people who get the degree and work in fields including journalism, linguistics, communications, advertising, social work, publishing, theatre, theology, law, and government. Not to mention my professional, paid blogger dreams~
