Life as a Music Major

Studying music is pretty much what I've always wanted to do in college. Pretty much. And now that I'm finally doing it, I can actually tell you guys what life as a music major is all about!

I was especially excited to start this semester! Since last year, I changed my major to Instrumental Music Education. This means that my whole curriculum changed. This semester alone I'm taking 8 music classes, and 1 history course. Yes, this means that I'm registered for 9 classes! 

I'm sure you're thinking to yourself, "Ermahgerd, why would you ever do that to yourself?!" Truth is, it's really not as bad as it sounds. A few of the classes only meet once a week, and the classes are really fun to be in most of the time! To me, some of the classes don't even feel like class. It kind of feels like I'm sitting in a room with a bunch of other music lovers learning about music. Call me a nerd if you must, it's most likely definitely true.

When I'm not in class or at work, you can usually find me in the music building practicing! Every music major has to perform in at least one student recital every semester as part of your semester grade. In addition, you're required to be in at least one major ensemble. I'm in the UT Tyler Wind Ensemble again this year! Spoiler alert: we're playing some pretty awesome stuff this semester!

I know this sounds like a lot, I'll admit it really is. But the truth of it all is that I'm finally doing what I love to do! I love all of the people in my classes, my professors are really awesome, and I'm getting better at playing that music. SO, I think that you all should do the same. Follow your dreams and do what you do best. It'll keep you happy!

Also, beware the stairs in the music building! They're really steep, and really hard to fall down.. I'm speaking from experience. Let it be known that I'm a fairly clumsy person, and stairs aren't my thing. But I've never actually seen anyone who can walk up those stairs and not be out of breath. So just do what I do and take the elevator! :)
