Music major Danielle Benton of Fort Worth is The University of Texas at Tyler’s first freshman recipient of the state’s Clara Freshour Nelson Music Scholarship for the 2011 – 12 year, Dr. Kenneth Wink, College of Arts and Sciences interim dean, announced.
She is one of four students at four-year state universities to receive the award in the amount of $6,000 per year.
Each academic year, the Texas Association of Music Schools selects 10 applicants from four-year state universities, four-year private institutions and two-year colleges to receive the renewable award. Recipients must maintain an overall 2.5 GPA, demonstrate financial need and merit and be a music major at a Texas institution that holds full TAMS membership in good standing.
“I feel very honored to have been awarded the Clara Freshour Nelson Music Scholarship,” Benton said. “It is a great privilege, and I know this scholarship will go a long way toward helping me achieve my goals, both personal and professional. I thank God and the Texas Association of Music Schools for giving me this opportunity.”
She previously was awarded the 2010-11 UT Tyler Outstanding Student Freshman Music Theory Award.
Benton will graduate in spring 2014 with a bachelor of music in vocal music education and hopes to become a voice teacher in either a public or private school setting.
Her hobbies include reading, singing and song writing.
Since 1938, TAMS has been fostering cooperation, understanding and excellence in music education among its members.
