Why UT Tyler?

Why Tyler?

Since this is my first post as part of the UT Tyler Student Communications team, I figured I would answer a question that quite a few people have asked me since I moved out here last June: "Why Tyler?"

Well, coming from Denton after just getting in to UNT for voice and growing up in the Dallas area my whole life, this seems like a fair question to ask someone like me. "Because I like it", is the most common answer I give. Shortly after high school a series of events sent me to TVCC in Athens, TX. Now Athens as a city doesn't have much going on for the average college student (especially after growing up in the city), but it did show me a different pace of life. After being accepted to the UNT college of music for the fall of 2008, I was elated to be back in the city after spending 2 1/2 years in Athens. But after my first semester it was just kind of...blah. School was fine (the campus was beautiful), and Denton has a lot to offer your typical college guy. Shortly after this period of "blah", I decided it was time for a change in major and location. Dropping 70 pounds prompted me to explore the health field and a few visits to a good friend in Tyler made me want to be a part of this city. Is there as much to do as Denton or Dallas? It's debatable depending on who you talk to, but it my opinion there is not. However, it's just kind of different here. It's slower, but not too slow. The people are friendly, the teachers are more than qualified, and the campus is pretty college-y.

In my first semester in a city that was supposed to bring me change, it delivered in a big way. I've met some of the most amazing people, re sparked my passion for a career in music, and most importantly I joined up with the gents over at Sigma Alpha Epsilon. My life has completely changed since I've been here, and it has been 100% for the better.

"Life changing experiences" my have to become my new answer to the Tyler question.

It might also look nice on a banner or school catalog. Just a suggestion.
