From Disability to Accessibility

Occasionally when I am stuck on campus waiting for a class or an organization meeting to begin, I really get a hankering for a nice nap. Since I don’t live on campus, I always like to flit away to the third floor of the University Center here at the University of Texas at Tyler and find a nice comfy couch to catch a few ZZZ’s on. However, the other day I thought I’d gotten lost...

The third floor is home to many of the organization offices here on campus and I was accustomed to going up the stairs and seeing Disability Services in Room 3150 just as I had walked up. To my confusion, where this office used to be, I instead saw Student Accessibility and Resources. Of course I was thinking Huh? Is that a new office?

Nope! As it turns out, the Disability Services center made the decision to change their office name last semester to Student Accessibility and Resources (SAR) . So, if as a student you need access to their office, keep this in mind.

What sorts of things can the Student Accessibility and Resources center help you with, you might ask? Well, if you or someone you know is a student that may require some assistance to help make college the best experience possible, this is the place to go for any extra assistance you might need. This is their mission statement:
“The Mission of the Student Accessibility and Resources (SAR) office is to provide students equal access to all educational, social and co-curricular programs through coordination of services and reasonable accommodations, consultation, and advocacy. We work collaboratively with students, faculty and staff to create an inclusive educational environment
The website provides a list of eligible needs and conditions that the center can help with, as well as a look at the equipment they have available to use for those who may need it. If you would like to learn more about their policies and procedures before you visit, click here.

If you’re interested in visiting their office, it is once again located on the third floor of the University Center, room 3150, and they are open every weekday from 8am-5pm. For more information or to speak to someone in their office, feel free to call 903.566.7079
