And we have finally gathered, what little humans remain against the snapping, bestial horde. The mission was straightforward, but not simple, a vial of patient zero's blood needed to be collected for a chemical bomb that would leave the area intact but wipe out all life... without that blood the zombies wouldn't be effected. Simple enough, but we had to get access codes to the bomb, 4 strands of code for each human, and with 20 humans that number seemed impossible... some would not make it home. The helicopter carrying the code strands was shot down by renegade humans over a forested area, we would need to send two teams, one to get the vial, one to get enough beads for everybody... then activate the bomb, run to the bomb shelter and hit the detonator, shielding whoever was inside from the explosion. The humans and zombies each had a HERO unit, a specialist, the zombies had a tall, lanky zombie that had retained most of his faculties and was able to launch razor sharp discs at us, getting hit by one meant you were downed for 30 seconds. The humans had a young, female berserker with a giant staff who was able to cleave zombies with one swipe. We divided into two teams, made our plans, distrust was heavy in the air, at any time if somebody had the blood and 4 code strands they could detonate the bomb and leave us all to be burned away.
I set off with the forest team, I knew the area well and would be the scout, we stormed from our safe haven to the woods, instantly being trailed by zombies. Somebody spotted our HERO unit and got her attention, we would have a trump card in the woods. Battle broke out, we lost our team captain, designated "Rambo" not a good sign of things to come. We dashed into the woods, trying to get distance from the zombies but looking every where for the strands of code, they looked like harmless beads but we knew their true purpose. Picking up codes here and there, we viewed back and saw more and more zombies surround us from all angles. I had found 2 codes when the conflict happened, we were down to 7 humans and surrounded by 13 zombies. I made my break for it, I dashed through bushes, sticks, briars, limbs, I gashed my arm on thorns when I heard the screaming. I looked back for an instant and saw a standoff of what humans remained and I saw the zombie HERO unit descend upon them, I never looked back and ran for daylight. The woods were a maze and I still needed my codes, I found one on the ground, a code strand I already had but I could give it to somebody later, I looked around me and was amazed that no zombie had given chase or noticed my absence. I found another code, and yet another, my set was complete, but I was absolutely lost in these woods.
I noticed a familiar landmark and charged for it, I broke through the treeline and got my bearings, I was near the baseball field close to safe haven, but not close enough to feel safe. My feet were already starting to beg for rest and I was bleeding, so I walked to my destination, running would draw far too much attention to me. It seemed like an eternity, peering over my shoulder, scanning the horizon, the sun beating down on me, I was driven insane by the anticipation. I started talking to myself "what are you doing, you can't outrun anybody, why did you abandon your teammates, you'll be taken as soon as you see the haven" I ignored the voices and pushed forward, I must survive. Like a beautiful mirage, I saw the haven, a giant building the zombies could not breech, to my amazement I never saw a zombie sentry and easily walked into the fortress. I had to meet a MODs operative and give him my code strands so I could gain access to the detonator. I opened the door, he looked at what I can only assumed appeared to be an attacking phantom. Blood trailing down my arm, covered in dirt and sweat, carrying a blaster rifle, burned from the sun, muttering to himself, and jingling 5 strands of code like a enthusiastic child.
I handed him my codes and he informed me he had not seen another person and that the vial of patient zero blood had not yet been returned. I slumped to the ground, my entire team was wiped out, there were no more codes, if they returned the vial I would have to fight them over it so I could detonate the bomb and save humanity. So I waited, waited for what seemed like years, as my mind cleared and I made plans on how to get the vial of blood. When a familiar face breezed through the door, it was another one of our scouts that went with the blood team, he told me that they still did not have the vial and that the area was swarmed with zombies. That's when a sudden burst of communication on my radio happened, the blood team was at the doors of the fortress, they burst through the doors looking like they had been through two wars. All out of breath they revealed what I was afraid of, they had not recovered the blood... the position was too fortified, they were chased into the forested areas and were able to recover codes of their own. My hopes for survival thinned, I could not trust them to not detonate the bomb before I reached safety.
At that moment a crash was heard, the zombies had broken through the fortress doors and were storming our location, we gathered our supplies and made a mad dash for a defensible position, barely making it in time. But now we were being surrounded by zombies, they could not reach us, but it would take a large effort to break out to collect the blood. We made our plans, sent out our HERO to harass the zombies and keep them occupied, as a team stormed off at top speed to recover the vial. I stayed behind, my feet were nearly crippled, I could not keep up with them. After a few minutes I heard it, a large battle just out of my eyesight, as the humans burst into the area and jumped onto the platform, safe. All out of breath and with a few lost members they handed the MODs operative the container. He looked at us and said "...what is this? This doesn't have the blood in it." ...we looked at each other... we had been tricked, a renegade human must have planted this to trick us.... and it had worked, we would need to go there again and get the vial. I looked around at my team, they were all exhausted and had the look of defeat in their eyes. But we must steel ourselves, we must try again. After a brief rest the team once more charged from the platform to UC to get the vial. Me and another human stayed and took pot shots at the zombies to keep them off balance from charging the team. For what seemed like an eternity we waited for the team to come back, like an explosion they burst forward from a door running at top speed back to the platform, when they arrived they all collapsed from exhaustion, but they had gotten the vial, the bomb was made ready... it was time to go.
We rallied together, armed ourselves for the final conflict, the last mad dash for the finish line. The zombies licked their chops in anticipation for the meal to come. HERO units dueling with one another trying to get the upper hand, when the zombie HERO was stunned that's when we made our dash. We erupted from the platform shooting anything that moved, in a small opening I jetted from the group, I would take the opposite approach and hope nobody would give chase. Another survivor followed me as we made our own attempt for safety. I ran to the doors to cut through a building.... LOCKED! I tried every door, oh no oh no oh no, all the doors were locked. I would have to take the long way around, costing me 2 minutes. I could only hope that we would make it in time. We ran, my legs screamed at me in terror as I pushed them beyond their pain tolerance, but I must make it, I must survive. Zombies were gathering behind us, it would be a close one, but I must make it. I'm running at full force, forgetting all the pain, forgetting all the fear, I see it, I see the shelter, I'm so close to it, so close, I see them! 3 humans have made it to the shelter, there would be more survivors, we did it, we survived.... why are they closing the doors, no, I'm so close, no, please I'm ---
