The University of Texas at Tyler Bass Team finished in the top 10 at the 2011 National Guard FLW College Fishing National Championship. Senior management major, Tyler Fisher, of Flint and senior kinesiology major, Matthew McClellan, of Tyler beat teams from Texas A&M University, Lamar University, Auburn University and Virginia Tech University, among others. This is the first year UT Tyler participated in the national championship, which Murray State University hosted this month on Kentucky Lake. The UT Tyler duo qualified by finishing in the top five at the National Guard FLW College Fishing Texas Division Regional Championship on Sam Rayburn Reservoir in Nacogdoches. Both Fisher and McClellan are founding members of the UT Tyler Bass Club, which began in fall 2009 as both a student organization and recreational club sport. National Guard FLW College Fishing is a nationwide competitive bass-fishing program open to all full-time students at four-year colleges and universities. It consists of 20 qualifying events, five regional championships and the national championship. FLW Outdoors provides boats and drivers for each competing team along with travel allowances. All participants must be registered, full-time undergraduate students at a four-year college or university and members of a fishing club recognized by their college or university. FLW Outdoors, named after Forrest L. Wood, the legendary founder of Ranger Boats, is the largest fishing tournament organization in the world offering anglers worldwide the opportunity to compete for millions over the course of 191 tournaments in 2011.
