Juggling life

Working 19 hours a week and 12+ hours of class and the homework for those classes leave very little time to have a social life.
Your friends go out to dinner without you because you are working and they are hungry and unwilling to wait for you. Like seriously, guys, i'm making money and you can't wait for me?
I've missed out on Texas Roadhouse and FREE pancakes from IHOP cos' i'm working.
Most students working during the day or afternoon fitting their schedule to get the most time out of it.
The upside to working a lot is that when you get day off, it's ah-maz-ing unless you have tons of homework to do but it's mostly awesome.
So those working students, heads up high when you miss the opportunity to hang out with friends, because you are in fact doing something totally worth it in the end!

2012 Bucket List

Today I went to lunch with some friends from one of my many jobs I have had while in college! It was amazing to spend time with people who I have not seen or talked to in a while. While we were at lunch one of my new friends (we met today) asked us all what was on our bucket list for this year. I was seriously stumped. I had no idea what I wanted to accomplish with my life this year. So after much more deliberation, I have limited it down to my top ten and I decided to share this list with all of you!
My Bucket list for 2012:
1    1.       Do something adventurous everyday
2    2.       Get another tattoo
3    3.       Make new friends
4    4.       Help someone do something really cool
5    5.       Take more pictures
6    6.       Learn Spanish
7    7.       Expand my musical horizons
8    8.       Get a ride on a motorcycle
9    9.       Go mountain biking and NOT fall
1    10.   Save up enough money to buy clothes!
All of this being said there is a chance that I won’t achieve any of these goals. But, that’s ok with me. It is college and college is like a free pass to take time to figure out who you are. It’s like for these four years society gives us a “get out of jail free” card. So I want to take this time to explore myself and figure out what I am passionate about and what I enjoy doing. I have joined this online site which is kind of like living social (I am sure you have all seen these commercials). It’s called Moolala. I personally think this is a really weird name but I get all sorts of deals on it like a trip to the Caribbean for like 200 dollars and a diamond bracelet for like 15 dollars! It’s pretty awesome! I am hoping that this site or maybe a site like it will help me achieve some of these goals, like the buying clothes goal. Who knows maybe it will give me a discount motorcycle ride! Any tips are always welcome and I am excited to share this with yall!

DIY Free Spring Break

Instead of going to Padre or skiing, I'm staying on campus this Spring Break.
Coined "staycation" by some person with too lax an understanding of words, I plan on having fun near home for cheap. I'm making a trip to home to Oklahoma for a music festival at the ending of April, and hopefully a trip to France this summer.
I'm thinking a free Spring Break.

Free Things I Plan on Doing:
  • walking around the woods on campus
  • making collages out of old magazines
  • silly workout, best if done with a friend (pop in an old workout tape and laugh while you gesticulate. Bianca says Jane Fonda)
  • listen to CDs all the way through
  • sew up all my clothes differently to make them cool B)
  • swim!
  • color my hair with Kool Aid (purple?)
  • rub my head and pat my belly
  • beautify my resume with watercolors
  • use old paint to refinish ugly furniture, pictureframes, corkboards, etc
  • find a free art show
Okay, maybe you want to play basketball instead. Whatever. The point is, I'm going to have fun, and it won't cost much~

My Professional Journey Starts Here!

In my last post I talked about my internship and how excited I was for the experience and everything that lay ahead of me. Since then my enthusiasm has not diminished in the slightest. I am just as excited as ever to be given this opportunity for experiencing not only the place that is Colorado Springs, but also the company and the people that I will be working for. So excited, in fact, I have been planning my wardrobe and places that I need to visit once I am actually in this position for probably 12 hours in total this weekend. After dwelling on this for some time I decided that I should be focusing less on what I will wear and more on how I will do the job and how I can make that position as successful as possible. I want to replace the question of “what will I wear?’ with “what will I do to make an impact?” To do this I have decided to go on a journey of talking to people within my university and people whom I know to be successful and try to get as many helpful hints and tips to make my internship a success. I have had the amazing experience of being a part of UT Tyler and being given the opportunity to know members of the university who are very successful and willing still to talk with me and teach me whatever they can. As I have begun to explore I have realized that this internship will require a lot of me. I don’t think that I realized how BIG this was until within the last couple of days. I will be gone for an entire summer. I will turn 21 in Colorado away from my friends and family. I will leave everyone here while I go and explore this new chapter in my journey to become a professional. WAIT!! When did I start this journey? Why didn’t anyone tell me? Why am I remarkably close to being a real grown up? Can’t we slow this thing down?!?!  NO! Life is going to continue with or without me. It’s like I am up to bat in a baseball game and  it is my job to take all of these curveballs being thrown my way and just swing away!  No matter how sure or unsure I am about that pitch I just have to swing and hope something good comes from it! So this blog marks the beginning of my professional journey. Let’s do this thing!

Psychmarkcrimaccountturejustice is my major

Courtney Sheets and Megan Allen already talked about choosing and deciding their major. Now it's my time to shine!

I've been told by many many people that changing your major is okay. Everybody does it and it's good to change because you learn what works best for you.
I believe this but this does not calm down my mind as I calculate the income of my future job by my major and my future happiness in this job and field.
This past semester alone, I have bounced around changing my major over FIVE times (Criminal Justice, Marketing, Psychology, Accounting, Architecture). But i'm still a Marketing major.
(Eli thinks this means i'm trying to be Batman with indecisiveness with my majors)

Through my accounting class, I've learned I shall never be an accountant because basically my head explodes in that class when we go over something new.
Currently i'm on a kick to become an Architect. I've done tons of research about it but I have NO idea whether I can get into a program and all that jazz.
So I keep telling myself "One step at a time, Obi-Wan". So first step! sign up for Physics 1301 next fall and beast mode or fail the class to decide if I want to still be an architect. For now i'm drawing buildings in a moleskin while going through life.

Overtime Madness!

Some of my friends were playing in the UT Tyler intramural league, so I decided to check out the ladies final match. A close game, the footage kicks off at the beginning of overtime. A friend and I give you the color commentating. Enjoy!

UT Tyler Vlog: How to Get Around a Proper Haircut (Straight Hair)

In college, my basic hair maintenance lost time to much needed extra sleep. Not the mention the price of a basic cut. Courtney's Hair Vlog inspired me to show y'all how I "cut" or "trim" my own hair.

WARNING: This is not a proper hair cut.

Starving Artist? Try Starving Writer.

After deciding to attend college, I already knew what I didn't want to do. Picking a major is, undoubtedly, a major decision. You will never find me happily sitting in a math or science class. My preference is not based upon not recognizing the importance of those fields; I do. However, I have always been more moved by issues in communication and language. Without proper skills in reading and writing, a person has no hope to retain lessons from the past or communicate effectively their preferences for the future.

When I came out to my family as an English Major, they were pleased, assuming that I would be a teacher or professor. After I cleared up that I had no interest in teaching, they were concerned. "But isn't that the only thing you can do with a degree in English?" "How will you support yourself?" "Oh, you'll be broke your whole life."

Of course, I started to worry. How would I support myself? If everyone expects me to teach, maybe that is all I would be capable of? I started considering possibly changing my major back to business. That idea was far more well received, and seemed practical.

Then, I read the description on UT Tyler's website, and the information they shared eased my mind. Without understanding the past and the people that inhabited it, we have no hope to better ourselves in the future. Plenty of fields are looking for individuals that have a command of language. My department graduates people who get the degree and work in fields including journalism, linguistics, communications, advertising, social work, publishing, theatre, theology, law, and government. Not to mention my professional, paid blogger dreams~

Browsing at the Coffin Shop

There's nothing quite like spending a night in a basement with 60 other people in dim lighting, surrounded by bizarre pictures. Not exactly a place you think you'd see a live show, is it? Well, it all started on Facebook actually. (What doesn't?) I was carousing around, wishing I had something to do that weekend. Then, thanks to Megan, I noticed an event I knew I'd have to attend. It was a live show downtown at a place called The Coffin Shop. Already I'm interested because the name sounds awesome. Plus, there were already two bands I'd seen before (and loved): the Problem Preachers and the Eggs. The other band, Untouch, I had never seen live but I knew I wouldn't be disappointed.

After a full week of waiting, Saturday night finally arrived. So, a friend of mine and I ran to my car (in the rain) and made our way downtown for the night. It was really interesting trying to find the place; there were some  people that were just as bewildered as we were when we asked where the place was. Luckily for us, we eventually found the entrance in the form of a tiny dark doorway and a small courtyard wedged into the wall. When we walked into it, however, we were greeted by the friendliest people. They marked us in and we went into the main room where the first thing you see is lights. Little Christmas lights, all tacked up on the ceiling. There was pink and red crepe paper hanging from the ceiling; leftovers from Valentine's Day, I supposed. People were standing around, chatting in the dim light of the basement, awaiting the next band to do their sound check. I felt like I was in a movie; I had never been to a place like this. From then on, I spent the night in musical bliss.

Like this one

On all of the walls, there were spectacular pieces of artwork, all of which was contributed by local artists. This particular one was my favorite. I'm a sucker for satire and prints, so this painting held my eye the entire night.

This band, the Eggs, was the headliner. They were last to play, but definitely worth waiting for.

Here is a shot of the drummer and the back up guitarist.

Now, just the drummer.

Needless to say, this was a night to remember. Despite the cold and rain, I was able to enjoy an actual music show with people I had never seen before. I honestly can't wait for the next one.

Roomies

Ah. It's renewal time for on-campus residence students.  The students must choose to flee to an off campus residence or to stay or move facilities. Whispers and handshakes spread through the campus as the friends decide to room with friends for first time. Residents "fighting" over the three bedrooms and the rooms with the best view.
I'm currently living alone in a double at Ornelas Hall. I searched through my friends to see if they needed a roommate and they wanted to live on campus. It came down to moving in with one of my best friends Stephanie in a triple next to three of our close friends. We're pretty close. I spent most of the last semester with this chickadee. So i'm pretty jazzed to be living with a friend. My roommate that I had last semester left a mark on my view on being paired with roommates. So I went pro-active and decided to pick my own.
Rooming with someone that is a close friend has it pros and cons. The cons: we both hope we don't end up hating each other and it ruining our friendship. The pros: we know each other very well, we have common friends, and we've already pre-established our room rules.

Information Overload

If there's one thing you should learn through all your years of education, it's how to take a test right? I mean from the TAAS which became the TAKS which is now the STAAR test through your years of school, to the ACT and SAT at the end of your high school, we should be pretty good at test taking by now right? Well that's what I thought. I was wrong. Don't get me wrong, all those years of test taking do help in knowing how to predict tests and also taking it efficiently but there's just no substitute for learning the material. Let me explain further. I'm like the master of last minute test taking. I can cram information quickly and dish it out for an A, but certain professors (like one I have now) try to make sure you don't get away with that. How? Give a 100 question test over 7 chapters. It's times like this I'm glad I paid attention in class and don't have to learn 7 chapters worth of new information in a day. I still however, get to study those 7 chapters. And here I thought it only got easier after the SAT.

The Best Day Ever!

I could seriously jump for joy! Today could quite possibly be the best day ever!!! You may be thinking to yourself “Self, today doesn’t seem very special. What is this girl talking about?” Well, let me tell you! Today is the day that I got an internship with Compassion International! For those of you who are currently asking yourself a new question “Self, what is Compassion International?”  Compassion is a Christian child advocacy ministry which desires to release children around the world from the grips of poverty through education and sponsorship. They currently sponsor 1.2 million children in 26 countries!
I have been involved with this ministry since high school when I began to sponsor my first child. Since that point my sponsor child has left the program and because I am now a broke college student I could not support another one. I found out in August that Compassion was hiring college interns for the 2012 summer and immediately knew I HAD to apply. Unfortunately I could not apply until December, but even then I could not guess the journey I would go through from that point until now.

Walkin' to School

So I took the camera and video-d myself going to class. Enjoy!

Moving Your Emotional Baggage to College

Just because we left home for school, doesn't mean we've left every problem behind. Sometimes, we come to college with bigger baggage than we ever knew we were lugging. Other times, the stress of academia can reduce us to (what feels like) a frazzled mess. Maybe we're more homesick than we ever imagined. We're adults now, and the real world can be a scary place. We have larger problems than a well intentioned, trusted friend can fix.
Going to UT Tyler gave me a wonderful opportunity to meet many new people. Every one of these new friends comes from a different place, a different paradigm. Being a good friend was something I have always prided myself in, so I needed some professional advice. I became a Peer Educator in my sophomore year. I needed to learn how I can help the people around me that were struggling. Things come up when you share a dorm or eat every meal together. Now, even after leaving PeerEds to focus more on school, I am thankful for the lessons I learned.
Though I have been properly trained to council my friends and give them the facts about their mental and physical health, I don't have all the answers. The Student Counseling Center is staffed with licensed professional counselors that are available to provide a variety of services for a wide range of concerns in a confidential setting. That means that they know what we don't know, and now we know where we can go to find any help we need. It is included in tuition for UT Tyler students. If any UT Tyler student is interested in visiting, you can just walk in. The office is located on the third floor of the University Center, next to the Student Testing Center. The lady at the front is named Millie. :)

I know this is heavy, y'all, but it is real.

UT Tyler Pink Out Basketball Game!

How To Not Cut Your Hair

Several times we have posted about being a broke college student, and this is completely true, but there are ways to live in a way that doesnt make everyone around you know that you are in fact completely out of money. For girls this can prove to be especially hard considering the maintenance costs of simply being a female, but not impossible. One of these ways is disguising the fact that your hair has not been cut in quite some time. This video shows you how to do this in some small ways, but here are some links to help you out more:

Writers Should Write

It is Friday, and I am discouraged. Midterms are fast approaching and the stress is getting to me. My classmates are planning more study sessions, more frequently. My to-do list notebook is running out of space on the page marked "Do Before Monday".

The porch professor said,
"Write, or you'll be dead in the water."
Wow, that's encouraging.

What I wanted to say is that,
I'm already dead! My best hope is to stay afloat! I'm drowning here!

But the truth is, I should be writing. Without practice, it doesn't matter what we are capable of anymore, it is what we can properly execute. Too many people are caught up in the "correct" way to do things, or their own idea of what would be "perfect".
Throw that away.
Nobody knows your art isn't what you planned. Maybe it is better.
So, writers should write. I get it.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun!

This morning I woke up and went to my professor’s house for breakfast! You may be thinking that is a little weird, but it’s not. One of the great things about UT Tyler is that you have the opportunity to not just learn from your professors, but get to know them! This professor in particular is an amazing teacher and person! Once a semester he opens his home to all of his classes (at their designated times of course) for a meal and a slightly different class time. For this class we made an 80’s music video. I am not sure what the point was, but I think it may have had something to do with trying to schedule a pretty huge chunk of time and make all of our ideas blend into one cohesive final product. SO, that’s what we tried to do! The video is below.  Let me know what you think! Girls Just Want to Have Fun – Cyndi Lauper

Time for reading?

When you're trying to struggle with time management, some activities tend to fall through the cracks and you lose time to do them. Reading in my spare time is one of those things I have dropped with the new semester. I like reading. For a number of reasons. But mostly cos' it's relaxing for me and the right novel envelopes you into the words and you are no longer existing just in the moment but also existing inside the pages of the novel.
But alas, back on topic, I somehow managed time to finish two pretty good size novels over the past two novel WHILST still being semi-social and a part of society. This is an accomplishment for me. Now I just have to follow through with this new leaf and continue my reading in my spare time!
So, readers, if you've left something in the dust as life consumed the time for a activity you enjoyed. We should all TAKE the time BACK to this activities we once coveted!
The next time I'm adding more time for is spending some time with my  xbox!

  :)

The College Nap

When you're a college student with a hectic schedule, there's nothing more essential than a nap! Naps re-energize you to go into your day and finish out strong. After a morning class, you can nap between classes. Or even after lunch, you can nap before work. Naps, to me, are just as effective as coffee or any energy drink. For example, after staying up till 4am studying for a test today, I woke up, took it at 9:30, and went off to other classes and finally lunch till about 1pm. At this point it was time for a break. My favorite nap spot? The couch! After a 30 min nap I was ready to go to work (well not at first, but a few min after getting up). Depending on the amount of time you have, you can take 30 min naps or an hour or two. Try not to go above as that may ruin your sleeping pattern, but everybody's different. Grab a pillow, a cover, boring background noise, and you're good to go. The only downside, you won't wanna get up at first.

Megan's Vlog About Her Afternoon Off and UTT Advising

As a junior, I have a personal adviser in my department. For freshman students, it starts at the The Academic Advising Center. Below is a link and their mission. :)

The Academic Advising Center is committed to providing excellence in advising while building relationships with students and supporting them in achieving their academic goals. To that end, we are committed to:
  • Creating a supportive and student-friendly atmosphere;
  • Encouraging students to set academic and career goals;
  • Empowering students to reach their goals; and
  • Providing individual academic support through quality advisement and confidentiality while maintaining and honoring the dignity and potential of each student.

Making meetings with advisers is easy and necessary. I feel much better planning ahead.

Ow... my body

I am in such.... pain, its as if my body has been assaulted by sledge hammer wielding jackalopes. Forget what I said in my last blog... working out is NOT making me feel better! BUT, I was well prepared for this when I decided to start doing p90x again, all the pain is really telling me is how far I've fallen down my mountain of achievement. At my peak no workout would leave me sore, let alone catatonic. It's really a sad state of things when you can't even muscle forth the effort to put on pants and have to wear gym shorts everywhere. But that's the lesson I leave you with, don't take your health for granted, this temporary pain I face now is magnitudes easier than the pain I would have to endure as an older man. That's always been my goal, to look forward to my twilight years in a healthy light, not having to worry about a lot of medical issues brought on by a sedentary lifestyle. But I'm rambling, I just felt like... talking to somebody about it.

Obligatory Valentines Day blog

Something creepy, just for you!
So, it's that time of the year again when stores begin to jack up the prices on their chocolates, cookies, and cupcakes  and every other commercial on TV is for a jeweler or florist. Yes, it's Valentine's Day. For some of us, that means "I love yous", stuffed teddy bears, and sweet things (eventual cavities). For those of us that are a little bitter about the whole Valentine's Day thing, you're annoyed at all sweetness, money spending, and general gushing. Personally, I stay in the middle of things. I honestly don't mind the  "I love you, sweetie"s and fluffy gift giving. I'm even okay with the couples so long as no one makes out in my face. I think that's a general rule for just about everyone, though. I can understand the more negative side, too. Some people just aren't into some of the (admittedly) materialistic displays of the holiday, and I can understand not buying into the whole idea that love is fat winged babies going around shooting people. But that's okay. We all know know what the realest and best part of Valentine's Day is: the half price candy the day after. Now, enjoy this mildly  uncomfortable Valentine's Day card. Happy Valentine's Day!

Valentines day? Nope! Valentines Week!

It's Valentines day! The wonderful day of the year when you show your significant other or that crush just how much you care and how special they...ugh...sorry I almost barfed. I like valentines day. Notice I didn't use that other four letter word. But you might ask how could you like valentines day if not for that word? It's really quite simple. Baked goods! Every year around this time, our apartment is filled with candy, cupcakes, cookies and other wonderful junk food. The best part? They're home made and not by me. People, please don't wait for that one day of the year to show someone they matter. Bake cupcakes all year round! But seriously, do it often and you might even find..oh here we go...Love! See I said the word. There's hope for me after all. With that said I'm off not to go celebrate Valentines day, but Valentines week. Cupcakes usually last a while.

Bad date experience series: Movie Brawl

So collectively the girls and the guys(if they choose) are going to share their bad date experiences.
So, in honor of all the love in the air, I've decided to share my bad date experience with ya'll.
It began with a boy asking a girl out to a movie. The movie title is completely forgotten because of the later events of the night. The girl thought it was a hang out but it turned out to be a date. The boy bought the girl popcorn and whatever she wanted. She secretly wanted to buy everything in the concession store but she did not.  The movie was pretty good no complaints. They walked out of the movie to the parking lot where  they discovered that a truck had backed into the boy's car. The owner of the truck walked up with his date and claimed that "he didn't do it". The boy and the girl showed the owner their movie tickets and showed that they couldn't have caused the accident. Then the mall police came. The questioning started and then fists came out in play between the owner of the truck and the boy's father (who came to the scene right before the police came). The men were pulled apart and the truck owner was fined. The boy drove the girl home after standing in the parking lot for 2 hours.
and she never saw him again.... The End

Campus Community

UT Tyler is a wonderful school tucked in the forests of East Texas. We have one of the most beautiful campuses I have ever been to and I truly enjoy getting to spend so much time here. When you are a college student your school becomes your home. I know you may be thinking to yourself “self, wouldn’t your apartment become your home?” To that I respond, nay nay. You spend so much time in class (anywhere from 12 to 18 or more hours a week), then you have to come back for projects, and studying in the library, then you eat here (because you are already here), then you have organization meetings you have to go to, and if you work on campus… you get the point. Your campus literally turns into a community to you. You have your buildings with familiar faces and places that you NEVER go into (for me that would be the engineering building). On holidays I am reminded of this, and although I am a bitter single, Valentine’s Day is actually a widely celebrated holiday. So on campus today we had a bake sale, many of the offices made treats, and flowers coupled with plush animals were scattered all around campus. Because our campus is smaller I know people in the organization that had a bake sale, I know administrative staff in the offices that had treats and many of my friends received these wonderful gifts. I know these people and it is great to get offered some of these tasty treats on amazing holidays like this! It is an amazing opportunity to be involved in a campus that gives you this opportunity. I encourage everyone to be involved in some sort of community while in college whether that is in college or it is your college itself.

Must be all the love in the air

I am in an amazing mood today and it feels pretty outstanding. Not sure if it's because it's Val day, or that I saw a ton of people I know today, or because I got to work out earlier in the day and I'm on an endorphin rush. Or... maybe it was that candy bar I had a few minutes ago... regardless, today's a good day and I'm happy to share it with you folks. I may be alone on valentine's day but that would never be enough to bring me down, I have a puppy to keep me company, I do hope that wherever or whoever you are that you get to see something or something happens to you that would put you in amazing mood and just think about how awesome you are. Because you're reading my blog, that auto makes you awesome in my book, and if you need a jumpstart, listen to this song if that doesn't put a grin on your face, then nothing will!

Courtney's College Vlog: Off-Campus Housing

This is a tour of my off campus apartment near The University of Texas at Tyler. On-Campus housing is not the only way! Off Campus housing is what I have found to be the best fit for me and I encourage everyone to give a try towards the later part of their college career. There are perks to living both on and off campus, but for me living off campus has allowed me to gain more independence, live by my own schedule, and have the ability to make my apartment my home! Let me know what you think!

Their Evil Plot!

It's been a fun fun day for me! Then again not so much. I already failed my so called New Years Resolution. Remember that blog about staying on top of reading and stuff? Yea well it didn't exactly go the way I planned. Now I thought to myself no worries. I can always read at the last minute and do very well. But it seemed my evil professors found out about my plan and decided to put their tests at the same time period giving me a total of four this week with two on the same day (today). Now you might say why didn't you look at the calendars, but that's beside the point. My professors were obviously out to get me. It's alright though. After my night and day of studying that only included 4 meager hours of sleep, I have wised up to their devious ways and will be better prepared next time. At least I hope.

Winter finally arrives?

Oh this crazy Texas weather, how do we cope with it!? Today was the first day that I had to legitimately zip up my jacket to stay warm, sure it's been cool or chilly a few times, but today was the first time I would actually say that it was cold. And boy howdy was it ever! Just an hour from us in Dallas I'm getting reports from my spies that it's snowing over there, snowing in Austin as well, so I assume that we will soon be receiving the dreaded snow. I always get a little worried around snow, simply because of traffic and people not knowing how to traverse the icy roads. But I do look forward to seeing the snow, it's really pretty and sort of gives us a whole new world to look at, and I get to walk my dog in the freezing air in the morning.... oh joy

Deflate and De-stress

You know, when it comes right down to it, I think college has been about juggling. Juggling time, work, resources, food, exercise… virtually a big circus act. So much so that if you don’t stop to take a look at things, you won’t remember what you did in college or how much you enjoyed it. Later on in life, when you’re looking back on what you’ve done with your university years, the first thing to come to mind shouldn’t be the stress. But how do you find time to de-stress? Surely dropping everything to go shopping or dancing or hitting a few rounds would add to the whole stress problem later on. Sometimes, it’s the smallest things that can make the worst stress manageable.

Allow yourself an hour
Sometimes, all you really need is a breather. When you’ve been running around for hours or even just sitting in classes back to back, you get tired and need to refocus. You could do this anywhere you needed to, like on a couch at the University Center, in a corner of the library, or outside in front of Harvey Lake. Whether it’s before your classes, after them, or in between, you should give yourself an hour to sit down, rest up, meditate, refuel, whatever it is you need to do to get through your day.

Take a Nap
As you spend more and more time in college, you’re going to wonder why you ever refused to take naps in elementary schools. You will encounter people who would sell their souls for thirty extra minutes of sleep. That being said, catch some z’s when you can. It’s perfectly fine to doze off on a bench outside or in a corner of the Patriot Zone. Just make sure to set an alarm if you’re going to do so before or in between classes. If you need a little extra get-up-and-go after, try eating a granola bar or some kind of protein like peanuts. It’ll give you some natural energy if you want to avoid caffeine.

Socialize with someone
Conversation is a great way to de-stress. Having a chat with a friend, or even someone you don’t know, is a great way to relax your mind. Talk about your assignments or some of your professors over a cup of coffee. Discuss your plans for the weekend, a funny joke, or whatever. Sometimes, just talking to someone can do wonders for your overall mood and stress level.

Eat some good food
I’ve never met someone in a bad mood after a good meal. Even if the food isn’t five star, just eating with some friends or by yourself in a place that you really like. When you feed yourself, it’s like rebooting your mind. Now, eating when you’re stressed should not become a habit. It’s not so much the food as it is the experience of going out and taking in the atmosphere of where you’re going to eat. Personally, I think that’s why people stay at a restaurant and talk after they’ve eaten. Food isn’t the only reason people come out; it’s the camaraderie as well. So every weekend, or every other weekend, just grab some coffee at a place that sells amazing cupcakes. Have a plate of nachos at that great Mexican food restaurant. So long as you remember moderation, indulge in whatever takes the edge off.

Reclaiming my Time

During a normal school day, I waste so much time. Time finding my pants. Time finding something to eat. Time finding my books. Time finding matching socks.
Time.
Time.
Time.
Time that I have to admit that I just don’t have. So, today, I will tell you I have actually learned from my mistakes.

My first step, as TJ suggested, I’m going to clean my closet. Actually, I will clean out my closet. After coming to college, I lost about thirty pounds by walking around campus and eating better. Almost half of the clothes that are in my closet, I can’t even wear anymore. It’s about time I let go, and embrace my new body. Maybe The Toms Shoes Campus Club will have another garage sale? I’ll have everything they need.

I aim to tackle that thick stack of papers on my desk. Yes, have used the excuse that I read a study somewhere that said that making stacks of things is our brain's way to say that we will come back to the task later. It is later, now I have no excuse. An accumulation of papers that embody all that is important… but not important enough to store, shred, or record? COME ON. Once I get rid of the piles on my desk, maybe I can use the space to write something, instead of hunching over my laptop on my bed. Isn't that what desks are for, anyway?

Before I turn in early, I will prepare a comprehensive grocery list of all the food I eat during the week. Without planning ahead and being realistic about what I need, I end up spending money on fast food that I do not necessarily have, and eating junk instead of something delicious and healthy. After I go shopping Tuesday, everything will be set.

School is much easier when I feel more organized. Man, I miss eating at the MET.

The Many Types of Professors

So many people tell you that college is different from high school and it’s true. I think the sole contributor to this change is obviously the difference in teaching styles. Professors teach in a completely different manner than your education major high school teacher. At every University there are a few select types of professors that I believe you should be aware of before entering any institution.
Past Professor: This professor at one point in time was at the top of their academic field. They are now out of touch with the members of their classroom and aside from their abnormally slow speech they usually have a particularly hard time hearing any question you ask. “What is the page requirement?” will more than likely lead you on a longer discussion about a political reformation you may have or have not talked about in recent lectures.
Progressive Professor: This professor is not too far removed from you in age or ideas. They are up to date with what is happening not only in their academic field, but also in the latest entertainment fads. They encourage you to think for yourself and their classrooms are a place for discussion. The assignments are mentioned in passing and they are not really sticklers for format, but rather content. They encourage any radical new ideas and or any thought that goes against the main stream. Sometimes when you see this professor you may think to yourself “self, I might be friends with this person… if they weren’t my professor.”
Passionate Professor: This is a professor who is excited not only that you are in their class; but that because of your attendance you have now showed that you too are passionate about their field of study. If you are a student who is not outwardly excited about the joy of chemical equations or molecular structure you might find this professor to be a little over zealous.  Do not be frightened if they begin to yell or move around the room frantically flailing their arms in the air. They are simply excited to share their passion with you.
Peculiar Professor: This professor is not so rare. This professor thinks that they are absolutely the most hilarious person in the world. So much so, that they may even die laughing at their own jokes in the middle of a lecture. (If this happens again, don’t be alarmed give a fake sympathy laugh so they can feel comforted that someone else gets their humor and move on. This professor may wear awkward sweaters, huge glasses, mismatched colors, and or black and brown (because we all know black and brown makes a frown). When you are in this class you will probably feel awkward FOR this professor, but they have been doing this for a while so they are comfortable being who they are.
Finally Power Professor: This professor for some reason struggles with the idea that any younger twenty-something student wants to disrespect them. They will probably restrict your seating, or make sure you do not leave until they say so, or may even tell you if you can or cannot use your laptop. Although, all of these things probably have good reason with normal professors, with the power professor they will reply with the infamous word “because I said so.”
Some of these professors, we can all agree, sound kind of ridiculous. It’s true, you will encounter professors you don’t like, but that is one of the ways college teaches you! You may not like your boss one day, but he is still your boss and you still have to listen to him. Having these professors has given me the opportunity to learn to appreciate, and even sometimes embrace, their wacky personalities. It’s all part of the college learning process. :)

Caffeine

Anybody else feel like the professors had conspired against us with making this past week the week of tests? They secretly and deviously planned to plan all their tests together and make their students sleepless and zombified. Which always ends up with staying up in the early morning hours studying or getting up in those early hours to before the test. Staying up late at night studying typical means lots of caffeine to keep drooping eyelids to win in the fight for sleep.
This past week some of our caffeine addiction is probably showing. Whether your choice of administering the need for a caffeine boost is coffee, energy drinks or sodas.
Being addicted or dependent on anything isn't very good obviously, so if you're like me and were hit with the recent epiphany that I may, in fact, have a problem with caffeine and sodas. Lucky for you, I have some tips to help stop the dependency! the right way.
1.Going cold turkey with caffeine isn't the best, you will usually deal with withdrawal symptoms
2. Start by decreasing your consumption gradually over days or weeks.
3. Find an alternative to drink and start replacing your daily dose of caffeine with it.
That's all I have! I'm starting today! by cutting my Dr. Pepper consumption to one Dr.Pepper a day! Woop! Let's see if this goes well.

Underlying Benefits

Herrington Patriot Center

When thinking about the short term benefits of being a college student, it may be difficult to come up with things that may be beneficial or positive while being in school. You have tests, finals, reports, labs, possibly work, and other obstacles to overcome while attending school on the daily basis. Being able to use the gym at your convenience without having to pay a gym membership is among one of those things that are often over-looked. According to http://sports.whatitcosts.com/gym-membership.htm, gym memberships cost an average of $25 to $60 a month ($300 to $720 a year) which could be taxing to a college students’ budget. While being a student at the school, you are able to work-out in a state of the art gym (Herrington Patriot Center). Can’t believe what you’re reading? Keep going, there’s more. Along with this, you are able to participate in Rec Sports, fitness classes, club sports, and also outdoor adventures; http://www2.uttyler.edu/hpc/. So to help you keep off that freshman 15 (http://go2uttyler.blogspot.com/2012/01/beating-freshman-15-so-worth-it.html) and to get in shape for Spring Break, come get your blood flowing at the HPC. Hope to see you there…..

Free Movie

Tuesday night, I went to the UC Theatre for a free screening of a movie called Cairo Time. At first, I thought it was going to be a documentary about Egypt. I was totally into a documentary, regardless of how long I’d have to sit still. After I looked it up I discovered that it was a romantic drama, I wasn’t sure if I’d be into romance.

I thought twice about going. Maybe it would be lame? It was free and I had already invited a friend, so I attended anyway.
Best decision I’ve made for myself in a while.
It was a magnificently filmed and acted movie, even with the gooey lovie dovie parts.

Aside from that, it was a movie of clashing American and Middle Eastern culture. The way women were seen, specifically, interested me.

In one part Juliette, the leading lady played by Patricia Clarkson, enters a coffee shop to find her friend Tareq, played by Alexander Siddig. She talks to him for 5 minutes of the movie, and finally notices that everyone was staring at her, and asks why. She finds out that coffee shops are only for men! Everyone that was staring at her didn’t say anything because “it wouldn’t be polite”.

The GATE Program, or Global Awareness Through Education, is a two-year residential learning program and a series of planned events on campus that are designed for students. They are globally engaging, culturally diverse, and always fun.

 Free movies, too.

A video game class!?

Greek Life

What is Greek Life? Greek life is a community made up of fraternities and sororities. The terms fraternity and sorority describe groups of men and women who join together to offer fellowship, academic support, leadership training, participation in campus activities, service to the community and University, and preparation for future careers. Sororities and fraternities are named after 2 or 3 letter combinations of letters from the greek alphabet.
Do you want to be involved? Here at UT Tyler we have several different fraternities. We have Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE), Pi Kappa Phi (Pi Kapp), and Kappa Sigma (Kappa Sig). We have 2 sororities which are Alpha Chi Omega (AXO) and Delta Gamma (DG). We are currently looking to expand our women's sororities by having an expansion committee come look at our University. These organizations all have Formal Recruitment in the Fall which is normally a 3 or 4 day process in which you get to know the organization and they get to know you. They then decide which of the people going through recruitment are the best fit for them. If you make it through all of the nights then you will receive your bid on the last day which is called Bid Day. We also hold informal recruitment or Continuous Open Bidding (COB). COB is usually a 1 night event in which you get to know the members and at the end they again decide if they feel you fit their membership criterias. If they do they will extend you a bid which would allow you to become a member.
Are there leadership oppurtunities? Fraternity and sorority members hold a large number of campus leadership positions and participate in leadership and developmental conferences on a local and national level.
What does Greek Life do? Each organization has their own Philanthropy which they support through various events throughout the year. Each year, philanthropic events allow Greeks to contribute their time and effort in many ways and benefit the community by generating hundreds of hours of service and thousands of dollars in fund raising. Greeks also hold mixers within the Greek community. These are times where they mix and mingle with members of the other organization to get to know them and their organization better. They are always willing to participate in other organizations events as well.
Why go Greek? Greek life is a great resource to get students involved. It also has numerous ways for students to get scholarships to get them through school. Being greek allows you to meet people who have connections for after school. It also gives you an amazing brotherhood and sisterhood that last forever!

Friendly Atmosphere

Coming from Dallas, I've always felt a friendlier atmosphere here in Tyler. People you don't know greet you, hold the door for you even when you're far away, and sometimes start conversations with you. An example of this is when I lost my wallet in the Cici's parking lot. And if u read my last blog, you remember this wallet had sentimental value. After I freaked out and did a mad search, I canceled all my cards and went out to my friends birthday party. I mean what else is there to do? It was the weekend and I couldn't get replacement cards yet. No point in sitting around whining for my wallet to magically reappear. The next day as I waited for my roommate to get back in the apartment community center (ID cards open our apartment doors), I get a call from our physical plant. A nice lady reports to me that someone turned in my wallet and she has it. Once i get there, I get the full story that someone found the wallet on the floor with its content scattered. They put it back together, brought it on campus and gave it to a student who then brought it to the physical plant. Everything was in the wallet except for the money (it was less than $15 so I didn't really care). I called and thanked the person who turned it in and was happy to have my wallet back. It was at that moment that I really noticed the friendly atmosphere of not only this campus, but the city...mostly.

Keeping the classroom interesting

I've been going to college for longer than I'd like to admit, at 3 different school locations, 2 different Universities, so for a classroom to be engaging and interesting is a major bonus in my brain, because after so many, they all sorta run together. But the classes I'm taking this semester so far have been the most engaging, and interesting classes that I've been fortunate to take. Mainly because of my International Marketing class, the subject would be one to easily fall into monotony and drudgery.

Tips for staying healthy in dorms!

Living in the dorms means living in close quarters with many people.
This increases one’s chances of getting sick very much.
I am of the lucky ones who has survived the dorm sickness of the first semester.
Here are some tips to help you survive this semester without getting sick:
1. Sleep.
Pulling constant all-nighters will not keep your health great. Try to get at least 6 hours or more a night.
2. Caffeine
Drinking too much caffeine can be harmful. So watch your caffeine intake.
3. Keep your room clean!
“Dorm rooms can be a breeding ground for all kinds of germs. It's communal living, so you usually have roommates and suitemates, and germs spread fast. Also, many dorms are used year-round for summer sessions and other educational programs, so when you first move in, you don't know how clean it really is and who lived in it last.” – Susan Ott
*Don’t clean your room for Health and Safety’s. KEEP it clean ALL semester!
4. Eat Healthy
Getting the vitamins you need is very important to stay healthy. If you don’t want to fruit or vegetables, buy multivitamins! But if you do go out and get some fruit to eat for snackage while you are studying!
Stay Healthy Patriots!

Friendships with a Time Difference

My high school friends and I knew this day would eventually come. We are all literally on opposite sides of the world. At first, I dreaded the idea of making new friends. After moving 37 times before high school, I was not looking forward to moving again and losing these people.

The three of us learned thick lessons of love and money by trial. We sometimes learned by luck. We examined our desperately human parents, and learned to understand our own weaknesses. Fighting hurdles with heart, when other muscles lacked. I was scared I was losing a wonderful support system.

I was worried for my friends, too. Specifically, I would worry about my friend who was always more timid than me. She is studying in South Africa, and we are so proud of her! After seeing how much she has come out of her shell, I've contemplated how I could pay for it, and UT Tyler seems to have it covered. I want to travel, too! Maybe I want to go to France or China? I could go anywhere else. I could do anything.

Before she left to study in Africa, we traveled to Hawaii to see our other friend. She is married now and completing her degree. No matter how drastically things have changed, the three of us are closer than ever, and truly appreciate our maturing friendships. Our worlds are only expanding. So far, I have a vacation home in Hawaii and a couch to crash on in South Africa~

O-Hall Three Bedroom Tour Vlog

Three Bedroom O-Hall Tour!!! Take a look at what it really looks like to live in a three bedroom at The University of Texas at Tyler! I hope you like it!!!

Major Decisions

In college you will be constantly asked questions. How did you interpret this text? What theories could you apply here? How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop? And all sort of very important questions like that. One of the most loaded questions I get is “What are you going to do with THAT degree?” I am a speech communications major and although I believe speech communications is great, for some strange reason nobody shares this mindset. I mean it’s not like when I graduate I will have a speech job at some communication factory somewhere. Things are very up for interpretation in relation to my future and, although I am a planner, I for some reason am ok with this.
I have changed my major 4 times since the beginning of my college career, but in so many ways I think that’s what college is about. Don’t let people lie to you, college is not about getting good grades or even about declaring your major (although these things are great and beneficial after college). College is about figuring out who you are and what you are passionate about. If you are passionate about people and culture, like me, don’t major in something where you have to meticulously work with machines. It might be a good idea, however, to major in something that deals with communicating with those people or more completely understanding their culture. You may major in something that does not give you job security after you graduate, but if you major in something you are passionate about you will not suffer through school to get out and only realize you now hate your CAREER as much as you hated your classes. Remember that college is about finding YOURSELF. Don’t spend your time trying to make everyone else happy by choosing this or that major. Spend your time figuring out yourself. Start now! If you are like I was and have no idea where to start my advice is use your resources. At UT Tyler we have an amazing career counseling service out of our Student Counseling center. You take a test about what you want to do with your life, and they help you interpret the results. There are also online tests that can help you figure it out. If that doesn’t work you can look at strength quest. Strength quest is an assessment that focuses on you and what your strengths are. If you are not somebody who likes assessments and everything I just mentioned sounds terrible, then I suggest you start living your life and figure it out. You’ll figure it out sooner or later I’m sure. I mean I did and after moving past the 4 major changes I think I am pretty successful!
