Work Ahead ... or Else!

New semester!

New classes!

New deadlines!

While the third thing I mentioned might not seem like the biggest concern when held against things like "Where is my Financial Aid?" and "Why did my roommates think watching You Got Served was a good idea?"

Things in the City of Tyler: Tyler Public Library

Yes, we have a library on campus, in case you still have yet to figure that out.  However, there are students on campus that have not ventured out to the Tyler Public Library. I currently work at the public library, so let me introduce you. If you live within the Tyler city limits, (i.e. you have moved here recently or pay Tyler property taxes*) all the resources are free. Ready for a walk-through?

Why UT Tyler Students Should Embrace Academic Literature

While trying to find a topic for this blog post, I was inspired by my co-worker Michael's post, “Habits, Practicing Self-Control, and Reading Lists,” in which he discusses his use of reading lists and their implications on time management and creating good habits. While reading this entry on the UT Tyler Student Blog, I realized that my blog post could discuss what makes up my personal reading list: academic literature.
Now, before I sound too pretentious to the readers of this student blog, let me clarify what academic literature really is, and discuss why it would be relevant to an undergraduate or graduate student.

Library resources!

So, Spring Break comes to a close here at UT Tyler . Time to get back to work and hopefully not go too crazy from all the work that was neglected over the break. It is about this time that I think I should mention how awesome our library is here on campus, 'cause it's a great resource I don't think gets enough press here around UTT.

One of the coolest things about the library ( outside of its obviously wonderful staff!) is the new page scanner device they have had brought in. The machine lets you scan whole sections of books and the dump the images to a USB drive. BAM! It's wonderful.

Next, did you know you can check out books from other libraries? The World Catalog is just one of the many services that lets you "borrow" books from other libraries and have then sent to The University of Texas at Tyler's Library so you can then rent them. Again, this is wonderful.

Go to our library and ask about the services/options you have available!

I LOVE BOOKS!

Summer Break

I love college. Don't get me wrong. I love learning, I love class, and I even love writing papers. I'm a freak; I know. Yet, every university student needs a brain break every once in awhile. If we don't take time to reload, we have nothing to give in our academic environment. So, if you are free from class for summer one, like me (or all summer you lucky duck), take that time to do some things that you don't get a chance to while you are in school!
  • Sleep until you wake up! Forget setting that alarm! It feels good and gives your brain a chance to sort out all of those things you learn during the day.
  • Clean your car. If you're like me, it is covered in dust and full of books and junk. Cut that stuff out. It makes your life take longer. Same goes for your closet.
  • Learn things you don't get a chance to in school. Google some stuff. Check out some books from the library.Yup, the UT Tyler library is open during the summer!
